How has semiotics helped me understand media analysis?

Semiotics is the study of use of symbolic communication. It is a huge part of the publishing industry. Every single detail included in a magazine has a meaning and was put there on purpose. Learning about semiotics has helped me to better understand the process of creating a magazine cover and the thought that is put into it. The one thing I would like to improve for myself would be my understanding of the signs that are put on the covers, because I still find it quite difficult to undertsnd why each decision was made and what it means.
