Semiotics magazine analysis
I have chosen to analyze Vogue's issue of March 2018. The model on the cover is Gigi Hadid, a well known supermodel, who is considered to be one of the most beautiful women in the world. First, the colour gold plays a key part in this cover. The masthead is golden, so is the main coverline. Gigi is dressed in gold clothes, her eye makeup is golden and she appears to be wearing body shimmer in a golden shade. The colour gold represents success, affluence and luxury. This sends a message not only about the magazine, but the model as well. Gigi is an incredibly successful model and TV personality. She has appeared on the cover of Vogue 45 times and is considered to be one of the top 50 models in the world. Vogue as a magazine is also a giant in the publishing industry. Founded in 1892, Vogue started off as a weekly newspaper and became a monthly magazine years later. Since then, it has been a staple in the publishing industry and one of the most respected and influential magazines in history. Therefore, the use of gold is justified.
Another thing that you can notice on the cover are the coverlines on the left side. There are five of them and they are written in a black and white pattern. Black and white in publishing usually represents modernity and open-mindedness. This can also be justified as Vogue has remained one of the most influential fashion magazines in the world for many decades now.
The picture of Gigi is another thing to be noticed. The shot is a head and shoulders shot. Her head is tilted, revealing her neck, which indicates that she isn't afraid to feel vulnerable. She is looking straight into the camera, which means she is engaging with the audience.
